With just a week or two left before schools break for Christmas, the vast majority of UK boarding schools have started sending out their 2018 6th form offer letters.

In an ideal world, every student will apply to just one school, pass the entry tests and sail through the interview. With an offer in hand, they will confirm their enrolment, and everyone can relax.

Predictably, the reality is not so straight forward: Most students will hedge their bets and apply to 3 or more schools. Likewise, most schools will receive a good few registrations for each space, and initial offers will go out to the “preferred” list of applicants. Some students will be declined outright, and others may be held on a waiting list.

The next month or so produces a bit of a free-for-all, as offers are accepted, rejected and, in some cases, come up for grabs again.

If you have received an offer for your preferred school, we would advise accepting without delay. If, however, you have not received an offer or are not satisfied with the offers received, do not stress, do not lose hope, and do not make any rash decisions.
